Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in Netherfield Park, a large estate located in the country. The arrival of a wealthy man like himself to a small town like Meryton has attracted the attention of many mothers hoping to marry off their daughters to him.

Profession… being a gentleman. No, seriously. One wonders what kind of lucrative income allows for the carriages and balls and estates that gentlemen enjoy regularly. It turns out that being a member of the gentry means that Mr. Bingley’s wealth doesn’t come from physical labor but from investments or properties.

Interests… horseback riding, playing cards, and dancing. He spends his time in the company of his sister Caroline and his friend Mr. Darcy. It’s surprising that Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley are such close friends. Mr. Bingley appears to be everything Mr. Darcy is not. When we first meet him, he is happily telling Darcy about all the pretty girls he danced with, while Darcy and Caroline are scorning the simplicity of the ball they attended. He is always happy to meet new people, welcoming the unannounced arrival of Mrs. Bennet and her daughters, and warmly agreeing to attend balls.

Relationship Status… single. Mr. Bingley has his choice of attractive women, but he’s mainly interested in Jane Bennet, the beautiful eldest daughter of the Bennet family. Mr. Bingley is completely enamored with her. Sure, the Bennets may not be the type of people he, Caroline, and Mr. Darcy were used to associating with in London. But he can’t help but fall for her. He says Jane is "the most beautiful creature [he] ever beheld."

Personality… sophisticated, charming, and outgoing. And on top of that, he’s rich, and easy on the eyes. Mr. Bingley gives the impression that he has no flaws. But we must wonder whether he could be too good to be true.
