Michael Grates

Living… in Houston, Texas, though he often travels to New York for business.

Profession… successful TV executive at In Your Face, an edgier, more obnoxious version of MTV. Basically, he makes a lot of money, and he talks animatedly on his phone… a lot.

Interests… Planet of the Apes and astronomy. Michael’s interests are simple and maybe a little nerdy, but they’re just hobbies – his job is much more important than collectibles or stargazing. Childlike wonder has to be replaced by adult responsibilities at some point.

Relationship Status… dating Lelaina, who’s definitely not like the women he meets around his office. That’s why he likes her. Michael realizes that Lelaina has a complicated relationship with her on/off again best friend, Troy, but he’s pretty confident that he’s got a leg up on the competition.

Challenge… balancing supporting Lelaina’s creative vision and doing his job. Michael’s job means he can treat Lelaina well and provide a sense of stability that she craves after losing her job. But working for a mainstream television network in the early 90s doesn’t exactly mesh with Lelaina’s idea of creative success. 

Personality… easygoing, smart, and responsible. Michael’s a casual guy living an easy life. He grew up somewhere along the way, without really thinking about it, because that’s what he was supposed to do. He’s good at what he does, and he’s not used to things that don’t work out.
