Maya Denise Wilkes

Grew up… in Compton, California with her mother. Maya is the only main character to grow up in a working-class home and as a teen mother. Maya faces her professional and social lives from the point of view of these circumstances, using them as a great motivator. She is never deterred by the difference in social background between her and the rest of her friends.

Interests… bettering herself. Maya begins the series prioritizing the wants and needs of others. Overtime, she begins to find pleasure in the pursuit of her own happiness: whether that be shopping, a girls’ trip, or even going back to school. No matter what obstacles stand in her way, she continually finds ways to keep herself on the path she dreams of. 

Profession... executive assistant. Maya works for Joan in the white man’s law office. Though her job designation is not as esteemed as Joan’s, Maya is intelligent, well-rounded and extremely cultured. Her characteristics debunk many stereotypes of black women in her line of work. 

Relationship Status… married to her high school sweetheart. Maya puts her husband above all. Even though they have been in love forever, Maya and her husband still go through some struggles. She is a constant battle between growing her relationship while also growing in her own life.

Challenge… balancing herself and her loved ones. Maya has been defined by her long-term relationship and teen motherhood for a long period of time. Once she gets closer to the rest of her friend group, she begins to stray away from the image she once held in her home. Maya must figure out how to balance her friendships, her family, and who she is becoming. 

Personality... wild, loyal, and fun. Maya says what she has to say and holds to her own. She is always looking out for her friends and family, and rarely caring for herself in the process.
