Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Overview... an American exchange student who has come to Paris in the late ‘60s for a year to study French. And he’s receiving a true education in France, though not necessarily in the classroom. He becomes a member of a cinema club and watches every movie he can get his hands on – good, bad, old, new, silents, Westerns, thrillers. He can talk about anything and everything with his new friends, the intriguing (and often clothing-optional) twins Isabelle and Theo. They talk and talk for hours about politics, movies, and everything else. Nothing is off limits with them. Nothing.

Personality... disillusioned and sexually liberated, but not as mature as he thinks. Matthew is learning the harsh lesson that before you can change the world, you must realize you yourself are part of it. So far, he’s only been standing on the outside looking in. He knows he’s as guilty as anyone else when it comes to failing to really making a difference.
