(Avoiding Spoilers)
Living… a life of luxury at Downton Abbey, a grand English estate. As the eldest child of an aristocratic and wealthy family with three daughters, Mary gets to spend most of her time indulging in leisure and relaxation. Still, she isn’t particularly satisfied.
Profession… unemployed. Mary doesn’t have to work, but she does have to comply with family expectations. As a result, she is quite displeased by her lack of control over her own future: “Women like me don’t have a life. We choose clothes and pay calls and work for charity and do ‘the season.’ But, really, we’re stuck in a waiting room until we marry. My life makes me angry.”
Interests… hunting, wining and dining. Mary is an aristocratic lady with aristocratic tastes. Her skills in both are a great asset when it comes to interacting with the wealthy, eligible bachelors who often visit Downton – many of them seeking her hand in marriage.
Relationship Status… single. Mary’s former (semi-secret) fiancé was the heir to Downton Abbey. Unfortunately, Patrick Crawley passed away on the sinking of the Titanic, leaving her prospects uncertain. Now Mary has to find another suitor who can provide for her.
Challenge… attracting a suitable husband. She must secure her future through marriage, as there is no legal way for a female to inherit the family’s estate. Luckily, Mary has the charm (when she wants) and beauty to bewitch most men she comes in contact with. It is simply a matter of choosing one. The trouble is Mary doesn’t always exercise sound judgment when it comes to that.
Personality… captivating, but cold. Mary Crawley is used to being the center of attention. She has plenty of suitors who would love nothing more than her affection and company. But, Mary isn’t one to fall in love easily: “Haven’t you heard? I don’t have a heart. Everyone knows that.”
