Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in New York City. Marnie moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn after graduating from Oberlin College, where she met her best friends Hannah and Jessa. She and Hannah were roommates in an apartment that served as the battlefield for many dramatic fights and confrontations. Later, Marnie lives with Shoshanna in Manhattan.

Profession… former assistant at an upscale Manhattan gallery. When she is laid off, Marnie takes a job as a nightclub hostess. The uniform is embarrassing, but she’s making it work. At the same time, she is attempting to pursue a career in music.

Interests... singing. Like the other aspects in her life, it’s been a journey of gradual humbling. She’s diving headfirst into her attempt at professional singing, but the world just isn’t responding as kindly as she hoped it would.

Relationship Status... in a complicated relationship with her college boyfriend, Charlie Dattolo. Though once in love, things haven’t quite been the same post-grad. Charlie’s clinginess is driving Marnie away, but she fears being alone would be worse than being in an unfulfilling relationship.

Challenge… keeping it together. Marnie is the most responsible of her friends, but underneath that mask of security is someone who is just as unsure of herself: “Sometimes being really good all the time feels really bad. But I’m on a journey. It’s my journey and I’m okay.”

Personality… mature and hating it. Marnie resents how grown up she is in comparison to her friends, and gradually shows more of a desire to break free and take risks. Her responsible persona can be overbearing and annoying — if anyone’s the buzzkill, it’s her. In spite of her maturity, she has major gaps in self-awareness. She sings Kanye West in the style of a lounge singer and everyone in the room wants to shrivel up and die.
