Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Overview… a weary and boozy psychiatrist who thinks he’s seen the worst this world has to offer. Dr. Powell, much to the displeasure of his wife, practically lives at his office at the Psychiatric Institute of Manhattan. The drearily cynical Dr. Powell, who has a few problems of his own, finds refuge in dealing with other people’s problems. Then he starts treating a curious patient who calls himself “prot” – his name is lowercase and rhymes with “wrote” – and says he’s an extraterrestrial from the planet K-Pax. He obviously can’t be telling the truth – can he? – but prot might be just what Dr. Powell needs to re-engage with the world.

Personality… skeptical, tired, and troubled. Mark doesn’t believe in the power of the human spirit or the beauty of life. He’s so stuck in his little rut at the Psychiatric Institute that he can’t see the joy in the everyday. Even at home, he takes little satisfaction in his wife and children – until he meets prot.
