Grew Up… in Paris. Mariane was raised in France, the child of a Dutch father and a Cuban mother. This is where she met Daniel Pearl, her future husband.
Living… in Karachi, Pakistan. Mariane spent years in Mumbai, India, while her husband worked as South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal. Now, Daniel and she have moved to Pakistan, where some of the world’s elite journalists are covering the newly inaugurated War on Terror.
Profession… journalist for French public radio. Mariane continues to work, even as Daniel and she are expecting their first child.
Relationship Status… married to Daniel Pearl. She explains, “My husband and I are both journalists. We are two people who fell in love because we have the same ideals. He’s someone who… I never saw him say a lie. I never saw anyone so honest.”
Challenge… saving her husband. A group with ties to the Taliban kidnapped Daniel the day before they were set to leave Pakistan. Now, she’s fighting for his life on the international stage. “And kidnappers,” she asserts, “their point is to terrorize people. But I am not terrorized…”
