Character Analysis

Grew Up… without a stable male role model. Marcus lives alone with his single mother, who isn’t often around to support him or give him the guidance that he needs. Lately, though, Marcus has been turning to his new older friend Will for life advice.
Visiting… his friend Will’s house an awful lot. Rather than go home to face his depressed mother, Marcus chooses to spend time bothering the much older Will, a jobless, privileged bachelor.
Profession… middle school student. The quirky and eccentric Marcus doesn’t really fit in at school, though he’s been getting some social tips from the charming Will to help him along.
Relationship Status… in love with the young punk-rocker Ellie. The nerdy Marcus doesn’t know how to charm the enticing and sophisticated rebel. He describes his passion for her to Will, saying, “I wanna be with her more, I wanna be with her all the time, and I wanna tell her things I don’t even tell you or mum. And I don’t want her to have another boyfriend. I suppose if I could have all those things, I wouldn’t really mind if I touched her or not.”
Challenge… saving his suicidal mother from herself. Marcus is too young to be taking care of his depressed mother. Though with Will’s help, Marcus steps up and tell his mother how he feels: “I can’t be here to watch you all the time.”
Personality… innocent, introverted, and kind. Dealing with his mother’s depression has made him slightly more mature than other boys his age. Marcus’s genuine and caring personality is the perfect foil for Will’s jaded and world-weary attitude. Hopefully he can teach Will how to love.

Will Freeman is a hip Londoner who one day realizes that his friends are all involved with the responsibilities of married life and that leaves him alone in the cold. Passing himself off as a single father, he starts to meet a string of single mums, confident in his ability to leave them behind when they start to ask for a commitment. And it seems to go quite well at first, until he meets an actual twelve-year-old named Marcus, who is more than Will bargained for.

He's single, unemployed and loving it. So imagine his surprise when Fiona, a needy single mom and her oddly charming 11-year-old son, Marcus, move in next door and disrupt his perfect world. Though Will soon discovers that a young boy is a "chickmagnet." They strike a deal that Marcus will pretend to be Will's son and, in return, Marcus is allowed to hang out at Will's house.
