Madoka Kaname

Living… with her loving parents in Mitakihara, a small town in Japan. Quiet and idyllic, Mitakihara is the perfect place for a young girl to grow up.

Profession… student, at Mitakihara Middle School. An eighth-grader, Madoka might not be extremely popular, but she tries her best to be kind to everyone. It's why she tries to befriend aloof transfer student Homura, after all. It's also why she ends up adopting Kyubey – a cute, cat-like creatures who offers Madoka the chance become a magical girl.

Interests… cute animals, her friends, and magical girls. Madoka's grown up on shows about magical girls, and she loves drawing potential costumes for herself and her friends. When Kyubey asks Madoka to make a wish and become a Puella Magi, she's initially delighted at the chance to live out her childhood dreams. However, there's much more to battling evil than pretty dresses, and Madoka might not be prepared for the ruthless new world she's entered.

Relationship Status… single. At 14, Madoka's still pretty innocent about romance, and she'd would rather cheer on her friends than attempt anything herself.  

Challenge… deciding whether or not to accept Kyubey's contract. On the one hand, being a magical girl is a dangerous task – with enemy Witches around every corner, Madoka would be putting her life in constant danger. But if she doesn't accept the offer, then Madoka leaves her friends and family unprotected. And as she learns more about the dark world of a Puella Magi, she starts to wonder about who – or what – her enemies really are.  

Personality… kind, loving, and naive. A sweet, meek girl, Madoka cares deeply for those around her, always putting the needs of others above her own. Incredibly idealistic, Madoka has always been an optimist, but Kyubey's new world of Witches and puella magi is starting to challenge that optimism. Still, even in the worst of circumstances, Madoka holds onto hope: "There's awful, horrible things in this world, I know that now. But there's a lot of things worth protecting, too.
