Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in Underland, a place “like no place on earth." As he tells young Alice Kingsleigh, it is "a land full of wonder, mystery, and danger. Some say to survive it you need to be as mad as a hatter – which, luckily, I am.”

Living… as the last member of his clan. Thanks to the evil Red Queen and her Jabberwocky dragon, the rest of Tarrant Hightopp's family is dead, and all that remains of the Hatter’s village are ashes.

Visiting… the Red Queen’s prison. After crossing paths with Alice, his human friend, the Hatter helps lead her to the Red Queen’s court, where he is quickly captured. Luckily, the Hatter manages to stave off execution by making hats for the vain Queen, but it's uncertain how long he can keep her anger at bay.

Profession… making hats. While he enjoys the job, Tarrant Hightopp also suffers the unfortunate side effects epidemic to his profession. Due to exposure to the mercury used in many hats, the Hatter's hair has turned orange and his sanity...well, it was never certain if the Hatter had any to start with, but the mercury certainly hasn't helped.

Challenge… helping Alice fulfill her destiny and save Underland from the dastardly Red Queen. Legend holds that Alice has come down the rabbit hole in order to restore the benevolent White Queen to the throne, but the Hatter knows that she will need his help and guidance in order to do so. Fortunately, he's an enthusiastic ally. In his words: "Down with the bloody Red Queen!”

Personality… constantly changing. The Hatter’s appearance tends to shift along with his mood, as his accent, outfit and tone of voice reflect his inner state. The two things that remain consistent, though, are his eccentricity and his devotion to Alice.
