Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in The Dreaming, the world where dreamers go as they sleep. It’s a plane of beautiful mountains, non-Euclidean cities, and dark-sanded beaches, the home of all Dreams and Nightmares, created and ruled by Dream of the Endless.

Profession… librarian of The Dreaming. She spends a good deal of time in an infinite library that contains a log of every dream that there ever was, as well as every book that was ever imagined. During Dream’s unexplained absence, Lucienne does her best to keep The Dreaming in one piece, but without Dream, the safety of The Dreaming, and by extension, humanity, becomes more and more uncertain.

Interests… The Dreaming, as well as all of the books within The Dreaming’s library. When she is not tending to the library, she often acts as Dream’s right-hand man, talking with the inhabitants of The Dreaming and undertaking research on his behalf.

Relationship Status… single. Although she cares greatly for Dream and The Dreaming, she doesn’t seem to have any romantic interest in anyone. Besides, Dream can be rather rough around the edges at times, and sometimes it’s better to keep to herself than to attempt to challenge his absolute authority. Still, she has her books, and she prides herself on her loyalty to Dream and The Dreaming.

Challenges… dealing with Dream’s sudden disappearance. Lucienne attempts to keep The Dreaming together. However, without Dream’s authority to keep the Nightmares and Dreams under control, and without his presence to keep The Dreaming alive, Lucienne is helpless as she watches the inhabitants of The Dreaming flee to the waking world, and The Dreaming slowly crumble to pieces. Still, she holds out hope for Dream’s return and does what she can to keep the ship afloat until then. As she says, “I thought about giving up. But I have a job to do, and I do it.”

Personality… calm, intellectual, and loyal. Lucienne’s greatest strength is her immense intellect and ability to reason. It’s not always easy working alongside the inhabitants of The Dreaming, given that some of them are the embodiment of Nightmares and others are, well…Dream himself. A deity who abides by a strict code of conduct, Dream can be extremely harsh with the inhabitants of The Dreaming and mortals of the waking world alike, and Lucienne often finds herself stepping in the line of gunfire in an attempt to talk the god of dreams down from his extreme decisions. This can draw the ire of Dream onto herself, but though she is a subordinate to Dream, it certainly won’t stop her from speaking her mind.
