Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up... in the sea, just outside of the coastal human-town Portorosso. Luca herds a school of fish under the watchful eye of his mother, Daniela, who is terrified of what might happen if her sea monster son is caught by human fisherman. Unsatisfied with his sheltered life, Luca can often be found testing boundaries and roaming farther from home.

Living… in Portorosso. After meeting Alberto, a fellow sea monster who lives on the coast above water, the two become quick friends over their shared desire to acquire a Vespa. To Luca, “Vespa is freedom,” it would give him the agency to do more than Daniela’s tight constraints have ever allowed. Luca runs away with Alberto to Portorosso, where they meet Giulia, a local girl who befriends them and allows them to stay with her.

Interests... astronomy. Luca is mesmerized by the night sky and fascinated by everything Alberto and Giulia teach him about it (even though the two have conflicting ideas on the matter). Beyond the stars, Luca simply loves to learn.

Challenge… gaining freedom and staying alive. Disguised among humans and prize-hungry fisherman, Luca must be careful to conceal his and Alberto’s identities. Despite the danger of being discovered, Luca remains in Portorosso to compete with Alberto and Giulia in the Portorosso Cup—his one chance of getting a Vespa. Will Luca be able to find happiness before getting caught? Can a sea monster find happiness in the human world?

Personality… tense, but bold. Though Luca must often fight his instincts, chanting, “Silenzio Bruno!” at them, he is able to push himself beyond his comfort zone. Luca is curious about the world and a compassionate friend.
