Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living... as the only android on the USS Enterprise, exploring the universe alongside his Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the rest of the crew. Though Data has many humanlike elements programmed into his processing systems, like blinking and aging, he is constantly learning about what it means to be alive.

Profession... Operations Officer and lieutenant commander of the USS Enterprise spaceship. Data’s duties include navigation and overseeing systems control, and his computer brain makes him an extremely adept and skilled officer. Since his model of android does not need to sleep, he takes on the night watch.

Interests… literature, art, dancing – anything beautiful and human. As Data says, “I am superior, sir, but I would gladly give it up to be human.” Using the ship’s holodeck program, he plays the role of Sherlock Holmes and solves mysteries – blending his love of detective fiction with his logic-based internal programming.

Relationship Status... single, though capable of experiencing romance. Love is not Data’s strong suit, but he develops many strong friendships throughout his time on the Enterprise. His best friend is Geordi La Forge, the ship’s engineer who is also a mix of man and machine. La Forge is blind but wears a visor that artificially allows him to see.

Challenge... aiding the crew of the Enterprise while figuring out what it means to be human. Though Data wants to be human, he is incapable of truly experiencing a fully human life. He does not feel emotions like the rest of his shipmates, except for maybe his feeling of longing. And while he isn’t susceptible to illness like everyone else, he can be hurt by computer viruses and is a target for the Borg, an enemy race of cybernetic organisms.

Personality... extremely intelligent, but terribly naïve. Data has a hard time with subtlety and reading human emotions, but can process information in a millisecond. And even if he doesn’t get all the jokes being thrown around, he’s still a fun guy to have hanging around the ship’s regular poker game.
