Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in her own world of constant inconvenience. Ling is convinced that Boston, and the world at large, exists solely for her benefit. She resents sharing a world with disabled people, berating the blind, wheelchair-bound – anyone who isn’t like her, essentially. When taking this into account, it’s no surprise that Ling lives alone by choice. The presence of anyone else would be too much of a hindrance.

Profession… lawyer at Cage & Fish. Ling first encountered the firm when she hired them in her sexual harassment suit because a man "oogled" her too much with his eyes. After that, she pressured Richard Fish into hiring her as counsel. As a graduate of Cornell Law School where she was editor of the Law Review, she was highly qualified. But she doesn’t have much passion for the life of an attorney – claiming that she’s rich and only goes to work to wear her outfits. Outside the law firm, she manages other businesses she owns, including a female mud wrestling club and a steel factory.

Interests... money and shopping. As she says, “At some point we have to face the certain reality: despite all the good the world seems to offer, true happiness can only be found in one thing – shopping.”

Relationship Status... single by choice. Although Ling can be quite the seductress, she doesn't need sex. In fact, she thinks it's messy. And it’s difficult for her to stay with the same man for too long because of her extremely critical personality. As she says, “It's a problem being beautiful. It's only the handsome men that ask us out because they're the only ones who think they have a chance. And handsome men are dolts. Life is unfair to us.”

Challenge… getting her way. Ling is clearly the outsider of the firm. She alienates others with her attitude and constant manipulation, but she was also a target of criticism before she was even hired. Many of the lawyers at the firm did not want her hired, as they knew she would shake up the dynamic. They assumed she’d slept her way into the job, despite her clear qualifications. She still has to fight for respect and secure her place among the firm’s ranks.

Personality… confident, blunt, and ferocious. Ling manipulates others to the point of awe. She treats people like props, either to be used or moved out of her way. Yet she shows such strength in her verbal assaults on others that you have to admire her. She is not afraid to say things the way she sees them, and she apologizes for nothing. In spite of the cold persona she projects, she does have a gentler side. She even took on a case to represent a terminally ill child suffering from cancer to sue God.
