Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Grew up… as a bright and dedicated student. Lindsay used to be a star member of the Mathletes at McKinley High School before she started to associate with the “freaks.” As she puts it, “All my new friends think I’m some goody-two-shoes, and all my old friends think I’m throwing my life away. What the hell am I supposed to do?”
Living… her years of adolescence in Chippewa, Mich., at the dawn of the 1980s. Life, according to Lindsay, is extremely difficult for a girl her age. Knowing how to fit in is more difficult than the math competitions in which she used to compete.
Profession… high school student. Lindsay has recently found herself busy protecting her little brother Sam from the jocks at McKinley, which is distracting her from her important studies.
Interests… changing ever since she started to associate with the school’s freaks and burnouts. Lindsay now prefers to listen to rock music, go to parties and skip school.
Relationship Status… looking for her first boyfriend. Part of the reason that Lindsay has taken up with the freaks is to be closer to Nick Andopolis, a misunderstood drummer with a passion for marijuana and the band Rush.
Challenge… finding a way to feel comfortable at McKinley High. Lindsay isn’t sure whether she wants to be a “freak” or a “geek” in her teenage years, and pressure from her parents and her peers isn’t making it an easy decision.
Personality… lost, confused, and angst-ridden. In other words, a typical teenager. Don’t misinterpret her melancholy pronouncements (“Is it just me or does the whole world suck?”) for true depression. Lindsay is just trying to find a way to fit in.
