Character Analysis

Grew Up… in New York, with many memories of Mrs. Basil E. (a nickname for her eccentric Great Aunt Lilian) who would create mysteries for Lily and her older brother Langston to solve. She grew up with big family gatherings at Christmas with matching pajamas and wholesome conversations.
Living… in New York, in her grandfather’s apartment with her brother and her two parents. Lily tends to stay within her own circle of loved ones and favorite places, only venturing further when pushed to by others.
Profession… high school student. She’s currently off for winter break, and she spends much time with a caroling group (full of adults) that she started to create new friendships and curb her loneliness.
Interests… books, crafts, and Christmas! She spends a lot of time in her favorite bookstore called The Strand, and she loves the book Franny & Zoey by J. D. Salinger. She is incredibly creative and takes pride in making her own clothes, even making herself a Christmas tree dress that lights up.
Relationship Status… single. She is looking for a boyfriend through a book of dares she made with Langston that she’ll leave in The Strand, hopefully for her soulmate to find. Lily likes to think that she does not in fact need love—according to her, “I don’t have a love story and that’s ok. I don’t need one. I have Christmas.” But despite her words, she is undoubtedly and most ardently a hopeless romantic.
Challenge… making friends. Lily has faced backlash for always being different from other kids her age. She never gave up her unique fashion sense and interests, and because of this, she faces isolation and lacks friends within her age group. She struggles with the insecurity that she is not as confident or likeable as she has portrayed herself to be in her book of dares.
Personality… quirky, happy, risk-averse, and solitary. One’s first impression of Lily might be that she is shy and quiet, but once she feels comfortable in an environment, she openly shares her interests and worries. While she wants to spread as much positivity as possible, she is willing to be upfront with the people she is closest to and let them know when she is worried or uncomfortable.
