Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… with her brother, Ryan, and oldest friend, Naomi Blestow. Lacie and Naomi met at an art camp when they were five, where Naomi talked to and comforted a scared Lacie. They used to plan weddings together and Naomi even helped Lacie make her favorite doll, an adorably well-loved Mr. Rags, but the two have drifted apart.

Living… with her brother Ryan, but their lease is running out and he’s going to move out soon. Their relationship is not as strong as it used to be, and they bicker often over just about anything. Naomi is ready to move out.

Profession… office worker. She works at Hoddicker, an office drowned in pastels and coworkers that whisper about each other and cast judgmental looks over their cubicles.

Interests… running, improving her quality of life, and checking in on everyone’s social scores. In the world Lacie lives in, credit scores are meaningless. The only thing that matters is a social status score. With a score of 4.2 out of 5, Lacie is on the borderline between complete joy (4.5 and above) and total despair (below 4). She’s determined to get her social score up to at least a 4.5 to have a life that is worth living.

Relationship Status… single. Lacie came out of a relationship with Greg, but she hates talking about it. Dating life is so stressful because every interaction she has with a date is rated on the social scale from 1 to 5. She can’t risk anything that will bring her score down.

Challenge… qualifying for a house. Lacie wants to move out, but she must improve her social status to qualify for a new home. To improve her score in a quick timeframe, she needs to hang out with extremely high fours. Even though she hasn’t seen her in years, her ex-friend Naomi (with a 4.8) is her best chance.

Personality… sweet, insecure, and neurotic. Everything Lacie does is filtered; she even practices her expressions and laughs in the mirror. She may be obsessed with being liked, but that is an unfortunate side effect of existing in the environment that she’s in. Lacie wants to impress others and her desire for admiration keeps her from showing how amazing she truly is. Her instincts are to be good to others, and she isn’t oblivious to how good it can feel to sit in your own imperfections.
