Kyon

Living… without many goals or ambitions. Kyon is just an average, if rather philosophical, high school student cruising along in life, and he's glad of his ordinary life. Unfortunately, when you're classmates with Haruhi Suzumiya, it's difficult to be anything approaching "ordinary."  

Profession… high school student and member of the SOS Brigade, the club Haruhi forms and coerces Kyon into joining. Formed to search for aliens, time-travelers, and other presumably nonexistent entities, the SOS (Spreading Excitement All Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya) Brigade is described by Kyon as a ridiculous, "never-ending hell." After all, Kyon doesn't believe in such myths – well, not until he finds out that Haruhi's a reality warper and the other SOS members are an alien, a time-traveler, and an “esper” with ESP and psychic powers.

Interests… varied and many. Kyon might assert that he's just "a normal guy," but he's far smarter than his grades would suggest. Most 16-year-olds, after all, don't reference Camus and Lacan in ordinary conversation. He also seems to be a fan of science fiction, especially Doctor Who and novels about time-travel.  

Relationship Status… single. Sure, Kyon's 16, but unlike certain reality warpers he knows, he can control himself. Still, he'd happily date any of the girls in the SOS Brigade – well, except Haruhi. Haruhi might be beautiful, but Kyon prefers his women at least somewhat sane.

Challenge… trying to maintain what sanity he has left. From secret organizations to alien attacks, ever since he met Haruhi, Kyon's life has been "one weird, unexplainable thing happening after another." Unfortunately, there's not much he can do about it. An excited Haruhi might be irritating, but a bored reality warper is far more dangerous. Kyon must keep her engaged or the consequences could be terrifying.

Personality… snarky, cynical, and level-headed. In contrast to Haruhi's outlandish beliefs, Kyon's a committed skeptic, one who wants nothing more than an ordinary life. Still, for his insistence on normality, Kyon's erudition and remarkable calm make him far from ordinary. After all, as he puts it, "I relax and kill time with an alien, a time traveler and an esper without losing my sanity. I must be somebody special."
