Character Analysis

Grew Up… in a well-to-do family. After a successful high school career, he got the grades to go to Georgetown, where he made all the friends he still has now. Kirby, like his friends, is learning what it means to grow up.
Living… in torment in Washington D.C. Kirby is under the spell of that odious thing called “love.” While visiting a friend at the hospital, Kirby runs into a medical student, Dale, a girl he liked in college. Based on this chance encounter, and a single date two years prior, Kirby considers himself head over heels. He’s living in the ecstasy of love – a wonderful, yet doomed place to be.
Profession… law student. He’s a recent graduate of Georgetown and is now attending law school there, but he’d gladly give it all up to have a shot at Dale. He’s not so sure about law school, saying, “Did you know there are as many people in law school as there are practicing lawyers?”
Interests… he loves to hang out with his friends at their local haunt, St. Elmo’s Bar. Between getting a few drinks with them, shooting the breeze, and being madly in love, it doesn’t seem Kirby has much time for law school.
Relationship Status… in love. He says, “There are several quintessential moments in a man's life: losing his virginity, getting married, becoming a father, and having the right girl smile at you.” After that girl gives Kirby that smile, it’s all over. He has to get Dale to go out with him. However with her busy schedule, and seemingly lukewarm feelings for him, Kirby will have difficulty changing his relationship status to “dating.”
Challenge… landing Dale. Though Kirby waxes poetic to his friends, the cat catches his tongue as soon as he enters Dale’s presence. His challenge is to either overcome his awkwardness and express his feelings to her, or escape the clutches of love some other way. Neither way seems easy.
Personality… optimistic and a touch oblivious, yet not completely detached from reality. He’s quick-witted, funny, and ready to take on the world – except for the world of love.

Seven friends—Alec, Billy, Jules, Kevin, Kirby, Leslie and Wendy—are trying to navigate through life and their friendships following college graduation. Alec, who aspires to political life, has just shown his true colors by changing his allegiance from Democrat to Republican, which freaks out girlfriend Leslie, who he wants to marry. Budding architect Leslie, on the other hand, has an independent streak. She believes she has to make a name for herself to find out who she is before she can truly commit to another person in marriage. But Leslie and Alec have decided to live together. Because Leslie refuses to marry Alec, he believes that justifies certain behavior. Kirby, who wants to become a lawyer and who pays for his schooling by working as a waiter at their local hangout called St. Elmo's Bar, and struggling writer Kevin are currently roommates. They are on opposite extremes of the romance spectrum.
