Character Analysis

Grew Up… on the streets of Ketterdam, a member of a gang called “The Dregs.” Before he joined, it was barely holding together. Even at a young age, Kaz turned it around, transforming it into a profitable criminal empire. Kaz himself would say, "My mother is Ketterdam. She birthed me in the harbor. And my father is profit. I honor him daily."
Living… in Ketterdam still. He has built up his own neighborhood with money from his criminal enterprise.
Profession… head of The Dregs, and of a smaller elite group known as the Crows. Small-time gang business isn’t enough for Kaz—he harbors a hatred for the compassionless elite of the world, and wants to take them down “brick by brick”, which requires funds. Fortunately, he’s very good at acquiring money.
Relationship Status… single. Kaz has haphephobia, or the fear of skin-to-skin contact, due to traumatic events as a child. He may have romantic feelings, but he struggles to express them. He even struggles to express friendship and affection due to his difficult way of life.
Challenge… crossing the Shadow Fold, a magical sea of darkness filled with monsters, and retrieving something from Ravka, a country ruled by a terrifyingly powerful dictator. As Kaz says, “If we’re going to survive a roundtrip through the Fold, we’ll need a miracle or two.” Another person might choose not to take this job, but it has an enormous payout, and Kaz isn’t one to let the odds keep him from making money.
Personality… cold, intelligent, and ambitious. Kaz has a reputation for being willing to do any job, no matter how grueling or unpleasant if its pays. He’s a mastermind planner, which is the secret to his success. While many see him as a villain, he does care for his friends, even when he struggles to show it.
