Character Analysis

Grew up… in India. After getting accepted into Caltech, she moved to California to live with her aunt Nalina and cousin Devi. Kamala appreciates that they are taking her into their home, and Nalina and Devi appreciate Kamala too. After the sudden death of Mohan (Nalina’s husband and Devi’s father), it’s helpful to have more family around as support. Kamala is treated as a daughter by Nalina, sometimes even more than her biological daughter Devi.
Living… a completely different life in California. Kamala used to only watch Bollywood movies, but now she is learning all about American culture thanks to Netflix. Her favorite TV show is Riverdale.
Profession… student. Brilliant and hard-working, Kamala is excelling in the biology PhD program at Caltech.
Relationship Status… dating Steve, a classmate at Caltech. She has fallen in love with Steve despite the fact that she is destined for an arranged marriage and doesn’t want to disappoint her parents. But when the doorbell rings and Kamala meets her future husband Prashant, Kamala is pleasantly surprised by how attractive and kind he is.
Challenge… torn between her obligations to her family and her own freedom. Kamala has been a dutiful daughter, but she wishes she could make her own decisions.
Personality… polite, warm, and driven. Not seeming to realize how gorgeous she is, Kamala is very down to earth and kind to everyone she knows. Although it’s admirable that Kamala cares about other people, she is starting to realize that there are times when she needs to put herself first. She is discovering what she really wants for the first time in her life.
