Julio Zapata

Grew Up... with very leftist parents in Mexico. They were relatively well off during his upbringing, but not nearly as wealthy as the family of his friend Tenoch, whose family was heavily involved in politics.

Living… during political unrest in Mexico City. The poor, rural population is ready to take back the country for the people... and Julio couldn’t really care less. As a young man, Julio cares mostly about sleeping with his girlfriend one last time before she goes to Italy, leaving Julio and his best friend Tenoch girlfriend-less and ready to have adventures of their own. They convince Tenoch’s cousin-in-law, Luisa, to accompany them on a road trip to a supposedly dreamy beach, “Heaven’s Mouth,” which they invent to lure Luisa in. But they may have bitten off more than they can chew.

Profession… student. Julio has not yet been to college and doesn’t really work yet. He’s not much of a devoted student, either. Frankly, there’s not much Julio is devoted to. 

Interests… traveling, his girlfriend, joking around, farting in the car, talking about sex, and drinking tequila. Julio is a typical teenage boy with immature and rebellious hobbies.

Relationship Status… in a relationship. Sort of, anyway. His girlfriend vows not to sleep with anyone else while she travels through Europe, but Julio doesn’t really trust her, and doesn’t expect to hold up his end of the bargain either.

Challenge… traveling peacefully with Tenoch and Luisa. Tenoch begins to rub against Julio as the two sit together side by side for such a long period of time. Even though they’ve been best friends for a long time, having Luisa in the car causes tension between them, and they start going for each other’s throats. Tenoch attacks Julio personally, even criticizing the appearance of his member: "It looks like a deflated balloon.” If they expect to come back from this trip alive, they’re going to have to learn how to get along.

Personality… humorous, care-free, and mischievous. Julio seems like a very simple man, but he has philosophical inclinations as well. A kind of simple man’s philosophy. As Julio puts it, “Truth is cool but unattainable… the truth is totally amazing but you can’t ever reach it.
