Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Overview… a woman whose passion for food is almost as strong as her passion for life. The wife of an America Foreign Service officer, Julia is trying out the expat life in Paris, France. But she doesn’t want to be a simple housewife: she wants to do something with her time abroad, rather than sit in idleness with the other American wives. It is when she realizes that there is no adequate French cookbook available in the English language that she sees an opening, and finally begins to understand her vocation. A woman who loves to eat, Julia begins to see it as her duty to bring the art of French cooking to the English-speaking public.

Personality… joyful, determined, and effortlessly confident. Julia is not deterred by the snobbery and sexism in France’s culinary world. She takes any criticism with a grain of salt, and refuses to be deterred away from the task at hand. Her charm and optimism are what give her cooking its unique and comforting flavor.
