Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… popular. Sister Jude, well, Judy Martin then, was loved by everyone in her town because of how beautiful she was, and she became a nightclub singer when she got older. Judy was a frequent partier and had some issues with drinking. She was almost married as well, but her husband abandoned her, causing her a lot of distress. Judy’s misfortune only goes on as she has a horrific incident, which she is to blame for, but tells no one. After this, Judy becomes obsessed with being a changed person and becomes a nun.

Living… on the East coast, at Briarcliff Manor. She happens to work at the Asylum too, and that job consumes her life.

Profession… administrator at Briarcliff. Every newcomer notices how terrible the conditions are there, and while Sister Jude isn’t unaware of this, she believes every abusive method is carried out in the name of salvation. There’s a rule for everything there, and this is because of Sister Jude. Everyone is intimidated by her, terrified of her long list of potential punishments. Sometimes, she lets the patients choose how they’ll be punished.

Interests… singing, saving souls, and hurting others in the name of saving souls.

Relationship Status… single. One would assume celibacy since Sister Jude is a nun, and while this is true, she often fantasizes about a priest, Timothy Howard. He calls her a “rare bird” and they’ve done some sensual hand-holding.

Challenges… many. And they all connect back to Briarcliff. There is a journalist, Lana Winters, who wants to expose the horrors of Briarcliff, and Sister Jude won’t stand for this. Sister Jude’s coworker, Dr. Arden has also been acting suspiciously when it comes to explaining the missing bodies of deceased patients from Briarcliff. He is also one of the many men that constantly undermine her at her job.

Personality… commanding, sadistic, and secretive. Although Sister Jude is religious, she is not full of hope. As she says, “The cruelest thing of all is false hope.” She does not grant second chances often, and it is her immediacy in carrying out punishments that lead almost everyone to be terrified of disobeying her. Sister Jude is not as pure as she wants everyone to be, but she defends her choices due to how she believes that she is primarily promoted by God.
