Overview... slave captain turned abolitionist. In his former life, John Newton was the captain of a successful slave ship. But after a haunting experience at sea, he's put away his sea days and turned to God. Now a devout Christian, Newton does his best to help the anti-slavery cause in any way he can, and urges his protégée William Wilberforce to pass abolitionist laws in England.
Personality... humble, humane, and haunted. It's been years since Newton stepped on a slave ship, but his memories of his former life still trouble him constantly. Perhaps there's no real way to do penance for his crimes, but Newton is determined to fight slavery in any way he can.
