Character Analysis

Grew up… in early twentieth century England. John is the third son of an infamous Romani gangster. His father deserted the family after their mother died, leaving the five children in their Aunt Polly's care. John is close with his siblings, but he spends most of his time getting into bar fights and punching matches with his eldest brother, Arthur Shelby.

Living… in Small Heath, Birmingham. John is an English patriot; he fought valiantly in the first World War alongside his brothers, Arthur and Thomas. 

Profession… member of the Peaky Blinders gang. John is engrained in the Peaky Blinder's lifestyle; he can often be found drinking whiskey and throwing punches. John occasionally works with the books on the legal side of the business, but he thrives when Thomas sends him on missions where he can get his hands dirty. With razor blades sewn into his clothes, John always has the upper hand.

Relationship status… widower. John's wife died, leaving the 24-year-old to raise their four children on his own. He’s hoping to find a new wife sooner rather than later, and he has no qualms about marrying for reasons outside of love. He hopes Lizzie Stark might become his wife, but Tommy’s meddling might prove otherwise.

Challenge… finding healthy ways to deal with his anger. John feels that he has a lot to prove. He is angry with the world for all of its injustices. His violence is fueled by an endless rage that John himself cannot begin to understand. 

Personality… loveable, witty, and feisty. While John isn’t afraid to hurt his enemies, he cares dearly for those he loves. He is adored by the women in life for his sense of humor and charm. Lizzie tells John that he is an “honorable man,” unlike his brothers.
