Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Overview... a lawyer’s apprentice with a strong moral code. In hopes of pursuing a career in law, John becomes apprenticed to a wealthy judge named Lord Mansfield. John’s particularly interested in prosecuting the Zong case, in which a slave-ship captain drowned his human cargo – an act that John finds deplorable. As he works at the Mansfield house, John develops a close friendship with the family’s niece, Dido Elizabeth Belle, a young mixed-race woman with aristocratic English lineage.

Personality... open-minded, passionate, opinionated, and idealistic. John sees the inequality inherent in his 18th century world and he believes he can end it by pushing for legal reform. He can be fiery, stubborn, and even a little insensitive, but it’s always in the interest of fighting for what he truly believes in.
