Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Living… in Outer Banks, North Carolina. Much to the dismay of Child Protective Services, John B, a minor, lives alone in his dad’s house. The house might be a little rough around the edges, but to John B, it is his last connection to his missing father. On the island, there are Kooks and Pogues, and John B puts it simply, “You either have two jobs, or two houses.” John B is a Pogue, which has its pluses and minuses. As he says, “The downside of Pogue life is we’re ignored and neglected. But the upside of Pogue life? We’re ignored and neglected, which means we do whatever we want, whenever we want.”
Profession… student and part-time boat hand. School isn’t one of John B’s priorities. With no parents to keep him on track, he skips class often and sleeps through lectures. Still, a boy has to eat. John B works on Mr. Cameron’s yacht, but when he is caught “borrowing” equipment, his employment might be short-lived.
Interests… surfing, boating, and finding sunken treasure. When John B isn’t in school, which is most of the time, he can be found on the water. He and the Pogues, JJ, Kiara, and Pope, are either scuba diving for shipwrecks or trespassing on private property in order to hunt down hidden gold.
Relationship status… single. John B isn’t focused on a relationship, but his good looks and cocky attitude give him plenty of options. Things with Kiara are starting to heat up, but the “no Pogue on Pogue mackin’” rule is always there to remind them to cool it off. John B recently started spending more and more time with Sarah Cameron, but if there is one thing worse than kissing another Pogue, it's kissing a Kook.
Challenge… finding his father. John B’s dad disappeared while on the hunt for the wreck of the Royal Merchant, a ship thought to be carrying over $400 million in gold. John B was not only left with his father’s crumbling house, but with his deadly goal of finding a cursed shipwreck. John B enlists his friends in order to continue the search for the Royal Merchant, in hopes that it might also lead him to his father.
Personality… reckless, hopeful, and ambitious. John B has been on his own for almost a year. No parents, no rules, and no limits. He might be reckless and a little downtrodden, but John B is also a hopeless romantic with a heart of gold. He loves his friends and can be a goofball, but at the end of the day, John B has a goal: finding his father. Nothing is going to get in the way of that.
