Overview… a librarian in the US Army who wakes up in a new world. Joe was selected by the powers that be to participate in the pilot program of a human hibernation experiment. They aim to send him one year into the future, but he ends up not awaking for 500 years. In the future, he finds that the gene pool has been drastically dumbed-down, parents name their kids after food products, and anti-intellectualism is at an all time high. He takes an IQ test and is deemed the smartest person on the planet.
Personality… modest, workmanlike, and with a low tolerance for B.S. Back in his own time, Joe falls exactly in the 50th percentile in every major category – looks, intelligence, temperament. He is literally an average Joe, and he knows it. Thus he appreciates more than most how screwed up our future society has become if he’s the most impressive guy around: “You know things are bad when they're coming to me for answers.”
