Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in California. Jim often reminisces about the most formative event of his childhood: when he witnessed the death of a Native American on an interstate highway. For the rest of his life, Jim identified with the persecuted Native Americans.

Living… in Venice Beach. Jim has fully embraced the freewheeling 1960s California lifestyle: drugs, sex, and rock and roll.

Profession… former film student and current rock star. His new band, The Doors, has become one of the hippest new bands to come out of Los Angeles. Jim, their seductive, dreamy front man, is suddenly a sex symbol for women all over America.

Interests… heavy experimental stuff. Jim calls it “testing the bounds of reality.” He’s always been into psychedelic experimentation, and the 60s are making it easy to push the boundaries further than ever before. He says, “I believe in a long, prolonged derangement of the sense to attain the unknown… although I live in the subconscious, our pale reason hides the infinite from us.”

Relationship Status… involved with Pamela Courson, whom he met at an L.A. nightclub. The two are irresistibly drawn to each other, and seem destined to end up together. However, Jim’s commitment to the idea of “free love” and his refusal to be shackled to monogamy irritates Pamela. The ensuing arguments are legendary in their ferocity.

Challenge… writing the kind of poetry that he believes the world needs. Jim believes that he has important things to say, and tries to spread them throughout the world via his music. However, the world seems unable to see him for more than a drunken playboy, a fact that causes no end of frustration for the troubled Jim – frustration that only pushes him further into alcoholism and drug addiction.

Personality… rebellious, unstable, and incredibly talented. Driven by self-destructive tendencies, he’s constantly lost in a drug-induced reverie. Simultaneously wise beyond his years and incredibly foolish, Morrison is determined to fly as high as his can, regardless of the inevitable consequences that will bring him crashing back down to earth.
