Jim Lovell

Living... with his wife Marilyn and their kids. They were planning a vacation to Acapulco when he found out he was destined to go somewhere else – to the moon! Jim promised his son that he would bring him back moon rocks.

Visiting... the moon on a four-day trip. The crew is scheduled to take off in the Saturn IVB booster. Once in space, they will float down the tunnel into the lunar module and land on the Moon. Jim is in charge of landing them there safely.

Profession... pilot. On this mission, he is with Fred Haise and Jack Swigert. Ken Mattingly was supposed to be with them, but got a fever and was not cleared to go. Jack took his place even though he has been out of the loop for weeks.

Challenge... getting back to Earth safely. Before they could make it to the moon, their spacecraft lost electrical power and began to slowly break down. With a crippled command module, there is no easy way to maneuver the ship. With the LM lifeboat (their backup) working longer then it was ever intended to,it's truly a race against time. 

Personality... level-headed. As he says to the other astronauts, “We're not going to go bouncing off the walls for ten minutes, 'cause we're just going to end up back here with the same problems. Try to figure out how to stay alive!” He’s the kind of guy you want with you in a bind. Which is good, because the Apollo 13 astronauts are in a huge one.
