Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in the library. Jenny spent most of her life studying “hard and boring” books so that she could one day attend Oxford University.

Living… in Twickenham, London. Jenny is fed up with her dreary suburban life. As she says of England, “This whole stupid country is boring! There’s no life in it, or color, or fun!”

Profession… student. Jenny thinks that she spends too much time with silly books rather than out in the world, experiencing things. In her words, “If you never do anything, you never become anyone.”

Interests… traveling. Jenny wants to “go to Paris and Rome and listen to jazz, and read, and eat good food in nice restaurants, and have fun!”

Relationship Status… involved with the mysterious, charming, and much older businessman David Goldman. Jenny yearns for life experience, and David seems to provide adventures. But what does she really know about him?

Challenge… finding out what she really wants from life. Jenny is dying to put down her books and see the world – completely against her headmistress’s advice, who encourages her to go to Oxford instead and become a teacher. But Jenny cannot put up with this “boring” life any longer. She explains, “Studying is hard and boring. Teaching is hard and boring. So, what you’re telling me is to be bored, and then bored, and finally bored again, but this time for the rest of my life?”

Personality… idealistic and romantic. Jenny is in a huge hurry to be an adult and experience the wider world. That impatience may lead her to heartbreak, or worse, but maybe that's just a necessary part of growing up.
