Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… in a wealthy family in Point Place, Wis. Though Jackie’s family is well off, she has certainly faced some hardships. Her relationship with her father is very delicate, and she often has to turn to Eric’s father, Red, for advice.

Living… life as the most popular, beautiful and sought after girl in high school. But being the most desired girl in school takes hard work. Only someone as vain, self-centered and insensitive as Jackie is (or can be) could do it. “Keep your friends close and your enemies fat,” she likes to say.

Interests… herself. Jackie is about as shallow and narcissistic as they come. She is very beautiful, but her vapidity and self-obsession often drive people away. “No, no, no, you just don’t move on from Jackie Burkhart,” she once said. “I’m like the bottle, you need a twelve-step program to break my spell.”

Relationship Status… dating Michael Kelso, the most attractive and least intelligent boy in school. Jackie and Kelso make the perfect match. She loves to boss him around, and he needs someone to tell him what to do.

Challenge… keeping a close eye on her boyfriend. Kelso adores Jackie, but she knows that he’s got a pair of wandering eyes. Jackie needs a man in her life. As she freely admits, she can hardly function without one: “Look, if I could run across the beach into my own arms, I would.”

Personality… self-centered and shallow. Growing up in a wealthy family, she is used to getting her way. Take, for example, her predictions for her future: “It’s simple, the woman just needs to be a cook in the kitchen, a maid in the living room, and an acrobat in the bedroom. And I can hire a cook and a maid.” Yet Jackie is also realistic and strong. Aside from her tendency to complain about boys, Jackie does a good job of dealing with her personal issues.
