Grew Up… in Baltimore. Jack went to Boston College and then joined the Marine Corps. However, he was injured in a helicopter accident, ending his active military service indefinitely.
Living… with his family. Jack is an active member of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. He is heavily involved in the political workings of Washington D.C. and becomes even more ensconced when Vice Admiral Greer gets sick and Jack is appointed acting Deputy Director of Intelligence. Jack is thrust into a conflict with Columbian drug lords who pose “a clear and present danger” to the United States, according to the president. Jack is responsible for solving this conflict to the best of his abilities.
Profession… acting Deputy Director of Intelligence, CIA. Jack Ryan has been a civilian behind the desk for many years now. When he is told he will be accompanying the special forces team led by “Variable” in a top-secret military operation in Colombia, Jack is more than a little surprised.
Interests… his family, politics, and conservative candidates. Jack Ryan believes strongly in at least the threat of military force as a means of solving international disputes, but now he will have to put his money where his mouth is – even if he still has a bad back due to the helicopter accident in his youth.
Relationship Status… married to Cathy Mueller. They are happy together, and it breaks her heart when she hears that Jack will have to go away for a while. But she understands that a man in his line of work must do certain things that she might not always want him to do – and must be very discreet about it.
Challenge… taking down a Colombian drug cartel. Jack is kept in the dark for a long time, but eventually he is let into the political turmoil that has caused the problems in the first place. The conflict is complex, but one thing is clear: Jack will need to both think and act quickly on his feet if he wants to survive.
Personality… intelligent, brave, and patriotic. Jack Ryan enjoys his job with the CIA, but never expected it would send him back into the throes of danger. But there’s something exhilarating about being part of an international “task force,” and Jack isn’t too old for this job quite yet.
