Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… with a father who did everything right. He ran a window installation business, he played by the rules – and was rooked and cheated at every turn. At a young age Irving decided he wasn’t going to “get taken,” like his poor father. Saying that he’d, “rather be on the taking side, than the get-taken side,” the young Irving started smashing windows to drive more customers to his father’s business. It was a lucrative move that jump-started his life of crime.

Living… with his wife Rosalyn and her son, Danny. Though Irving has his complaints about life with “the Picasso of passive-aggressive karate,” Rosalyn, he loves Danny as if he were his own son.

Profession… con-artist. Irving and his girlfriend Sydney have started their own fake business called London Associates. Irving has mastered the “art of becoming somebody who people can pin their beliefs and their dreams on.”

Interests… the finer things in life. Irving has a taste for the music of Duke Ellington, the bubbles of champagne, and thick Cuban cigars. But Irving isn’t a simple hedonist – he has priorities and finds his real happiness in being a Dad.

Relationship Status… married to the erratic Rosalyn, but in love with his partner in crime, Sydney Prosser. He’s afraid of dissolving his marriage, as he knows the vindictive Rosalyn will no longer allow him to see Danny, and might even call the cops on him. Still, he’s powerless to resist his attraction to Syndey, saying, “I feel like we have a secret, just the two of us. Like that thing where you just wanna be with one person all the time. You feel like the two of you get something no one else gets.”

Challenge… staying out of jail. Irving excels at finding ways to survive, even when his options are bad – and right now his options are very bad. After a con gone wrong lands them in trouble with a domineering FBI agent named Richie Dimaso, Irving is only given one option to avoid jail-time – using his skills as a con man to help the FBI pull off one of the biggest exposes of political corruption in America history. A man who usually likes to play it safe and keep his jobs “just small enough,” Irving will have to pull off the biggest, boldest scam of his life if he hopes to avoid spending time behind bars.

Personality… slick, smart, and charming. Don’t let Irving’s beer belly and comb-over fool you. He’s affable and sophisticated – after all, it’s his business to charm suckers into giving him money. Still, Irving possesses none of the false bravado that’s so commonly found in con-men. His success is a result of his caution and his uncanny understanding of what people really want – to be heard, to be appreciated, to be powerful. Blessed with a cool enough head and quick enough wits that he can make anything into anything, Irving is determined to hustle his way into a better life for himself and his son.
