Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… with a master fencer as a father. He loved his father dearly but when Inigo was 11, his father was unfairly slain by a six-fingered man. Inigo swore revenge and will not stop until the six-fingered man is dead. That’s why he has dedicated his life to the study of fencing.

Living… with his trusty companion-in-arms, Fezzik, a powerful giant. Inigo travels with Fezzik, with both acting as outlaw mercenaries – though Inigo only takes on the jobs in order to track down the six-fingered man. Inigo is devoted to his study of the sword, and won’t hesitate to take advantage of good fencing practice, even if it means battling with someone simply for the money. But when Inigo crosses swords with a mysterious Man in Black on the Cliffs of Insanity, he may have finally met his match.

Profession… mercenary and swordfighter. Inigo has practiced all his life for the opportunity to take revenge on the six-fingered man. To pay the bills Inigo has become an outlaw, and has now teamed up with Fezzik and a Sicilian boss named Vizzini. Together the trio has kidnapped Princess Buttercup, creating a political typhoon in the land of Florin.

Interests… fencing with his left hand, even though he’s right-handed. It’s the only way he can challenge himself given his superior skill compared to just about any opponent.

Relationship Status… single. Inigo’s only “significant other” is his giant friend Fezzik. The two are a kind of wartime couple, battling side-by-side and living each day as if it was their last. Inigo is too consumed with his desire for revenge to have the time or emotional space for a real relationship.

Challenge… finding and killing the six-fingered man. Inigo has memorized a speech for when he comes face-to-face with his life-long villain: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” It’s definitely catchy and to the point. Let’s just hope he gets a chance to say it.

Personality… cheerful and pleasant, but consumed by his pursuit of the six-fingered man. Inigo will stop at nothing to avenge his father’s death. It is the only thing that matters to him, and he would have no problem dying for this mission. But he does not plan to fail. This obsession, though, has taken over his life, and contributed to bouts of alcoholism. He needs to find a way past it, but that will likely necessitate facing the six-fingered man once and for all.
