Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew up… as a precocious smart-aleck. Dr. Ian Malcolm has always shown an interest in mathematics and advanced scientific theory, and he’s always been arrogant about his intelligence.

Visiting… Jurassic Park, a theme park located on Isla Nublar, a tropical island near Costa Rica. Dr. Malcolm was invited to visit the park in order to test its safety. Ian, though, is wary of the park’s main attraction: genetically cloned dinosaurs. As he states, “God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs.”

Profession… mathematician and expert in chaos theory. Malcolm teaches at the University of Texas.

Interests… aside from math and philosophy, Ian has been known to be a bit of a womanizer. Don’t let his occupation fool you: Ian is not a bookish, bespectacled math nerd.

Relationship Status… many times divorced. Ian says that he’s married “occasionally,” and that he’s “always on the lookout for a future ex-Mrs. Malcolm.”

Challenge… make it out of Jurassic Park alive. After a horrible accident (which Malcolm himself practically predicted), he and the other guests are forced to fight for their lives against a horde of bloodthirsty dinosaurs. As he puts it, “Boy, do I hate being right all the time.”

Personality… snarky, sarcastic, and extremely intelligent. Ian Malcolm is a rock-star mathematician: he always wears a black leather jacket, dark jeans, and cool sunglasses. His arrogance and sardonic tone haven’t helped to win him any friends. As he sarcastically remarks after being injured by a violent T-Rex attack, “Remind me to thank John for a lovely weekend.”
