Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… the only son of Stoick the Vast, the chief of their Viking village. Hiccup’s mother is dead, killed by dragons, so it’s just father and son now. Unfortunately, they don’t get along. Hiccup imitates his father, saying, “ ‘Excuse me, barmaid! I'm afraid you brought me the wrong offspring! I ordered an extra-large boy with beefy arms, extra guts and glory on the side. This here, this is a talking fish-bone.’ ”

Living… in the island village of Berk, which has a dragon problem. Even though the village is old, all the houses there are new because the constant fighting between Vikings and dragons destroys them. Children in Berk are taught to hunt and kill dragons, and Hiccup is no exception, as his father enrolls him in a dragon fighting class.

Visiting… the dragons’ nest, which Hiccup discovers to be the source of the dragons. Here he also discovers the reason the dragons must plunder his village.

Profession… apprentice to Gobber, the village blacksmith. Hiccup seems more interested in inventing his own devices and shooting down dragons than doing his actual job.

Interests… books, dragons, and mechanical devices. Hiccup is the only one who shows interest in reading the dragon manual, and even adds his own observations of dragons to it. He is also excellent at inventing mechanical devices – he even surpasses Gobber.

Relationship Status… single. He does, however, have a huge crush on Astrid, the most competent girl in his dragon fighting class. Too bad she sees him as a loser.

Challenge… proving himself to the rest of the Vikings. At first, Hiccup believes that he can only earn the approval of the other villagers by killing a dragon, so he disregards orders to stay back, but his attempts always end up causing more trouble for the village. Later, when Hiccup actually gets to know a dragon, he realizes that Vikings and dragons don’t have to fight each other, and his new goal is to get the Vikings to understand that.

Personality… reserved, inventive, compassionate, and sarcastic. Being an “embarrassment” to his father, Hiccup doesn’t have anyone to talk to, so he doesn’t talk to people much; when he does talk to people, he often uses sarcasm. Hiccup spends most his time inventing contraptions that he can use instead of traditional Viking weapons. Being more softhearted than the other Vikings, he can’t bring himself to kill an injured dragon.
