Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in a stable, loving household in London, the only child of two Muggle (non-magical) parents, who are both dentists. Hermione first learned about the hidden magical community on her 11th birthday, when she was admitted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her parents, though surprised and a “bit bemused” by her abilities, are still proud of their talented and bookish daughter.

Living… at the Hogwarts castle, in Gryffindor Tower. She shares a dormitory with four fellow female Gryffindor first-years, but never quite befriends them. She’s a bit of a loner until a run-in with a troll on Halloween creates an unlikely bond with Gryffindors Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, who previously found her “bossy” and standoffish. But soon the three are inseparable.

Profession… student at Hogwarts, working on mastering every spell she comes across; she somehow learned several before she even boarded the Hogwarts Express to school! Her devotion to schoolwork puts her at the top of the class right away, and she even scores 112% on a Charms exam during her first year. The only subject she struggles with during her first year is Flying, probably because you can’t really learn how to handle a broomstick just by reading Quidditch Through the Ages.

Interests… studying, studying and more studying. The Hogwarts library quickly becomes Hermione’s second home. Even when she’s not doing homework, she would rather read for pleasure than anything else. Her favorite book is Hogwarts, A History, which she often berates Harry and Ron for not reading, since it contains so much valuable information about their school.

Relationship Status… single. She’s only 11, plus she’s too preoccupied with her studies to worry about having a crush on a boy… for now.  Her bushy brown hair and slightly overlarge teeth make her a bit awkward (in the books at least), but she’ll most likely grow out of it. Though if proximity has anything to do with it, spending all her time with Harry and Ron seems to increase the odds she’ll end up with one of them.

Challenge… helping Harry and Ron while keeping them from getting “killed, or worse, expelled.” Her vast knowledge of the magical world makes her a real asset to the guys, who tend to act first and think later. The fly-by-the-seat-of-their-broom duo eventually rub off on Hermione, though, and she learns that she shouldn’t always follow the rules so slavishly when bigger issues are at stake.

Personality… studious, driven, organized, and a tad bossy. Although she irritates Harry and Ron at first, they develop a friendship unrivaled by any other. Though other students wonder how she wasn’t placed in Ravenclaw with the other “keen minds,” it becomes clear that her bravery and unswerving loyalty to her friends is what makes Hermione a true Gryffindor.
