Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Overview... a transgender rock singer from East Germany, born a biological male named Hansel Schmidt. She was given her mother’s name, Hedwig, after a horribly botched sex change operation to make her female and thus marriageable. With her new husband, she escaped to America and became an unsuccessful rock singer after her husband left her. She spends her time playing in coffee shops, making friends and eventually falling in love with a young teenager, Tommy Speck, who becomes the rock star Hedwig always desired to become by using the successful songs that Hedwig wrote with him.

Personality... boisterous and cocky, yet still somewhat naïve and optimistic. Hedwig is a true rock star – loud and in-your-face. But she also has a philosophical outlook on her life and wrestles with her gender identity, which causes her deep pain and confusion. She believes that Tommy is her other half and goes to great lengths to make him love her. Despite facing immense abuse and adversity in her life, Hedwig has big dreams and is determined to realize all of them.
