Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in the shadows. Hans, a killer of children, can’t control his perverse and deadly habits. He’s forced to hide away in the shadows – the entire town is looking for him. 

Visiting… the streets of Berlin, in search of his victims. Hans is careful not to show his face, to lurk in the darker corners of the city. He lures children into his grasp with gifts, sweets and balloons. 

Interests… music. Hans shows a particular affinity for Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” which he whistles to himself on the street. It is his calling card, in a way. 

Relationship Status… none. Hans, stricken with a ghastly perversion, is attracted to children.

Challenge… maintain control of his evil desires. Hans is not proud of himself. He does not wish to molest and kill children—it is simply that he must do so. “But I can’t control help myself!” he says. “I have no control over this. This evil thing inside me, the fire, the voices, the torment!”

Personality… conflicted, tormented and isolated. Hans is no conniving, plotting killer, he is simply a man who follows his instincts. He does not take pride in his actions, and is even scared of himself: “I want to escape, to escape from myself! But it is impossible.”
