Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in the time of the Titans, in the care of his mother Rhea. He had a tense childhood. Rhea treated him well, but his father Chronos was a tyrant. Rhea tried to protect him, but Hades still bears literal and emotional scars from his father’s abuse.

Living… in a mansion in the Underworld side of Mount Olympus. He has a swimming pool, a bunch of dogs, and more money than he needs.

Profession… King, technically. Though day-to-day he functions as more of a CEO. He works much harder than his brothers Zeus and Poseidon, who are also kings of their respective domains, but who tend to spend more time goofing off.

Relationship Status… on and off again with Minthe, a nymph who claims to love him but whose desire for fancy presents seems to outweigh her emotional commitments. Hades doesn’t want to be alone or to hurt her, but the relationship isn’t easy. Not like talking with Persephone, whom he took a shine to as soon as he saw her. He admires Persephone’s optimism because she sees things not for what they are, but for what they could be. Hades feels a strong connection to Persephone, and he’s falling fast. As he says, "I always assumed that falling in love would be something that would happen slowly over time... not all at once."

Challenge… overcoming his trauma to find a real partner. Hades might be a King, but he doesn’t feel desirable or interesting, and that makes it hard for him to find a relationship that truly works for him. He wants to work on that, but childhood trauma and his work with the dead keep him from chasing his desires.

Personality… anxious, intense, and sweet. He is the King of the Underworld, so perhaps it’s unsurprising that he comes off as broody and mysterious. When he’s acting in his royal capacity, or at work, he’s decisive and commanding. Off the clock, though, he’s lovably awkward.
