Character Analysis
(Avoiding Spoilers)
Grew up… in Galway, Ireland, or so she claims. Grace was raised in a loving home, but she hardened to the world when the Irish communists killed her father. He was a police officer, which inspired her to pursue a similar career.
Living… in Birmingham, England. Grace recently became a barmaid at The Garrison, a bar located in the middle of Peaky Blinders territory. Grace sings for the drunken men, hoping they spill secrets in return.
Profession… operative for the English Crown. Grace’s job at The Garrison is merely a ruse to infiltrate the Shelby family. Inspector Campbell employed her to figure out if Tommy Shelby stole 25 Lewis machine guns. These guns could give the Irish communists the means to fight the British and win. Grace’s job is to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Interests… singing. Grace poses as a meek barmaid to acquire intel from the Shelby’s, but she pushes back when they tell her the music has to end. She strikes a deal with Tommy: she will accompany him to the Cheltenham horse races if he lets her sing at the bar one night a week.
Relationship status… its complicated. Grace’s employer, Inspector Campbell, has been flirting shamelessly, but Grace finds him repulsive. Instead, Grace finds herself staring after Tommy Shelby, the very man she was sent to destroy.
Challenge… continually being underestimated. Everyone thinks Grace is “too nice” or “too pretty” to accomplish anything meaningful. She has to fight hard to be heard, both in her job as an operative and as a spy in The Garrison. Morally, she supports the Crown, but as she grows closer to Thomas, her allegiance begins to waver.
Personality… cunning, charming, quiet, and observant. While others spill their secrets, she is listening closely, waiting for the right time to strike. One of the first female operatives for the Crown, Grace believes she has a lot to prove.
