Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in Dubuque, Iowa, with his cat and his booze. Gerry has not seen his ex-wife, Dorothy, or their daughter, Wendy, in many years, as they live across the country in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Profession… real estate agent. Gerry doesn’t care about his job. Instead of showing homes to potential buyers, he’d rather spend his time gambling.

Interests… playing the piano, gambling, and drinking. At some point, Gerry learned to play the piano exceptionally well. More than anything, Gerry enjoys the thrill of betting money on anything just for the chance to make more. He bets on horse races, casino machines, dog racing, and poker. He doesn’t usually win, and he owes tens of thousands of dollars to the local loan shark. But his luck might be changing because he started winning when he met a man named Curtis who joined their poker game in Iowa. Curtis is on his way to New Orleans for a high-stakes poker game, and Gerry jumps at the chance to join him—especially since Curtis is fronting the money.

Relationship Status… divorced. Gerry longs to make things right and reconcile with his ex-wife. Maybe he can make things right with her if he can win big in the New Orleans poker game.

Challenge… finally winning big. Curtis is a spry, energetic and bold guy who knows how to win. With Curtis as his good luck charm, Gerry hopes he can turn around his life. It’s a longshot, but that hope is about all Gerry has left.

Personality… reckless, unstable, and desperate. Gerry feels sorry for himself and says that “some guys are born to lose.” But he is to blame for much of his unhappiness and bad luck. He doesn’t put in any effort at his job, and he spends what little money he has on booze and gambling. But maybe a road trip can change everything. Or maybe it can’t.
