Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in Virginia, born about forty years before the start of the American Revolution. Raised in a wealthy family, Washington eventually inherits Mount Vernon, a large strip of land containing his mansion and plantation.

Living… on the move during the Revolution years, sweeping across the colonies with his men as they prepare for war.

Profession… a General (he calls himself the “model of a modern major general”), eventually emerging as America’s first president. During the Revolution, he leads his men through seemingly endless battles full of blood and loss.

Interests… developing a country. Washington has learned to take things one step at a time, and as America approaches victory, Washington becomes more integral in its success. He dutifully fights for his country, and he has learned to do so without expecting compensation or glory.

Relationship Status… married to Martha Washington, whom he remains devoted to.

Challenge… coming to terms with his past and moving on. Washington has unintentionally been the cause of many deaths over the years, as says in his own words: “I led my men straight into a massacre, I witnessed their deaths firsthand.” While he’s a natural leader, he is certainly not perfect and has trouble balancing his civic duty with his daily life. Although Washington is right to learn from his past mistakes, he also needs to put them (and, eventually, his profession) aside to live life for his own. As he himself puts it: “I want to sit under my own vine and fig tree.”

Personality… wise, tough, and empathetic. Washington is the model leader for his country. It is because of him America shifts away from Britain’s monarchical reign and become a democracy. Washington’s passion and sense of civic duty makes him willing to put his people first.
