Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up… in China. Evelyn’s parents were overbearing, and when she fell for Waymond, they forced her to choose between her family or Waymond. She chose Waymond, so her parents disowned her. The two moved to the United States to start their new life together.

Living… with her husband Waymond. Evelyn never got rid of the feeling that her parents were right that she could have had a better life had she chosen differently. But she couldn’t go back, and so the two welcomed a daughter, Joy. Her father is currently visiting from China and all she wants is to impress him.

Profession… laundromat owner. She and Waymond live above the laundromat, so they are never too far from work. Waymond Wang, an amusing optimist, puts googly eyes on laundry bags if he thinks they look sad. They will soon host a Chinese New Year party open to all their customers.

Interests… acting and singing. Evelyn also considers herself a novelist, chef, teacher, and watsu technician.

Relationship Status… unhappily married. Everything her husband does seems to annoy her. Evelyn thinks her life would have been so beautiful if she had never married him.

Challenge… feeling dissatisfied with her life. Evelyn doesn’t enjoy her job, and her relationship with her daughter is also strained. She doesn’t understand why it’s so important for Joy to introduce her girlfriend to Evelyn’s father, who may die from the shock of learning of her sexuality. And on top of this, Evelyn and Waymond are being audited. Evelyn is overwhelmed, she just wishes she would have existed in another universe where everything went right.

Personality… strong, blunt, and stubborn. This combination can make her impatient, especially with her husband. But those same attributes just might help her save the world.
