Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up... doted on by her overindulgent parents, Monsieur and Madame Thénardier. The Thénardiers spoiled their only daughter while neglecting Cosette, the child they were paid to look after. So, Éponine grew up with great sense of entitlement.

Living... in Paris in the mid-1800s as tensions build toward the June Rebellion. Éponine’s family squandered away all their money, and so now Éponine is living in poverty, just scraping by.

Profession... helping her parents beg for, and sometimes steal, money. She’s not happy about it, and she dreams of a more respectable and comfortable life.

Interests... joining her friends in fighting for freedom for the people of France. Éponine is lonely and lost, and so she longs to be a part of something. The rebellion provides the perfect opportunity for that.

Relationship Status... single. But she’s pining for Marius, one of the student rebels fighting for freedom. She’s been known to follow him around and do favors for him, even as he continues to only see her as a friend.

Challenge... getting by on the rough streets of 19th-century Paris “on her own.” Éponine only wants to love and be loved, but in her dog-eat-dog world, that can be hard to find.

Personality... scrappy, loving, and selfless. Éponine has a strong sense of right and wrong, refusing to con people even when her parents tell her to do so. Even as the circumstances make it hard for Éponine to succeed, she continues to fight for the things she believes in and the people she loves, even to the point of making huge sacrifices.
