Overview... the recently married daughter of Aurora Greenway. Emma’s husband Flap never gained her mother’s approval, but Emma can be the kind of wayward spirit who won’t change her mind under any circumstances. Though in fairness to Emma, it often seems her mother wants her to stay in the nest for the rest of eternity.
Personality… uncertain, stubborn, and romantic. Emma wants to live a happy, loving life, and fears going down the same bitter path as her mother, who seems unwilling to open her heart again in middle age. Emma distances herself from her mother both physically and in her personality, but she will never truly escape the fact that she is her mother’s daughter. Emma is more like Aurora than she would ever like to admit.

Aurora and Emma are mother and daughter who march to different drummers. Beginning with Emma's marriage, Aurora shows how difficult and loving she can be. The movie covers several years of their lives as each finds different reasons to go on living and find joy. Aurora's interludes with Garrett Breedlove, retired astronaut and next door neighbor are quite striking.
