Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in Vienna, Austria, during the late 1930s. War is approaching, but between the fine dining and frequent events she hosts in her town, Elsa doesn’t seem to pay much attention. “I do have the finest couturier in Vienna, and the most glittering circle of friends.

Interests… hosting and attending parties. Elsa takes great interest in social events, especially those which boast the richest and highest class of people.

Relationship Status… widowed. The wife of a late baron, Elsa is searching for someone, desiring to be tied down again—preferably with someone as wealthy and extravagant as she is. Enamored with Captain von Trapp, she hopes to soon become his wife. But if her plan works out, the one downside is that she would become the stepmother of his seven children. (It’s okay, though. She has a plan which involves boarding school.)

Challenge… Captain Trapp isn’t as sure as she is about getting married. Their relationship has been slipping ever since he took on a free-spirited governess named Maria. Elsa is determined to win in the end—even if it means eliminating (and humiliating) the competition. Once Elsa has her heart on something, she’s not going to let it go without a fight.

Personality… elegant, charming, and self-involved. Elsa can also be cunning, and sometimes rather rude and insecure, despite her fabulous parties and abundance of wealth, which seems to be only a part of her (although a rather big one.) “But take all that away, and you have just wealthy, unattached, little me - searching just like you,” she admits to the Captain.
